Google nominated Suren Gazaryan

Google nominated Suren Gazaryan, who is currently in exile from Russia due to political persecution, for the Netizen of the Year. Google together with Reporters Without Borders will give the annual Award to one of internet activist who made the largest contribution into freedom of speech.

9 journalists and bloggers from Bulgaria, Egypt, Mali, Honduras, Senegal, Kazakhstan, and Vietnam are participating this year.

Suren Gazaryan, Russian environmentalist from Krasnodar krai, is representing Russia. Numerous times he drew people’s attention to illegal construction works in Krasnodar krai.

“Suren is known for his outspoken criticism of the Russian authorities on environmental concerns in Sochi connected to the preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.” (HRW)

The ceremony will take place on March 12, 2013 on World day against Cyber censorship, at the Google office in Paris.
